Our Story

A True Test Of Time And Courage

Let us take a moment to reflect on our journey and celebrate the milestones we've achieved together. Each step has brought us closer to our goals, and the progress we've made is truly inspiring. Here's to the hard work, dedication, and the exciting path that lies ahead!

G.E.A.R. Inc. ("Generations Empowered And Restored"), a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded on January 8, 2009 by Anita Michelle Johnson-Earle, inspired by her lived experience as the custodial parent of a child impacted by incarceration. When her daughter, Torea, was in the third grade, her father was incarcerated, and Anita Michelle became solely responsible for raising her, providing consistent emotional, social, and academic support during a critical stage of her life.

Navigating this journey, Anita Michelle relied heavily on the support of family and friends while facing the unique challenge of earning too much to qualify for government assistance, yet not enough to fully make ends meet. While balancing two jobs, attending night college, and maintaining a stable and nurturing environment for her daughter, she remained committed to uplifting others. These experiences shaped the vision and mission of G.E.A.R. Inc., an organization dedicated to advocacy, support, and empowerment for children of incarcerated parents and their custodial caregivers.

Anita Michelle credits her Uncle Henry and Auntie Cora for providing the seed funding that made it possible to establish the organization’s name and formalize its mission. Today, Generations Empowered and Restored, Inc., also known as G.E.A.R. Inc., continues to change lives through its guiding principle: Teach One, Get One, Save One.
